Following on from the sell-out first release featuring Benga & Walsh and the hefty drumfunk of Andy Skopes & Madcap on IME002, Immerse Records focus once again on the dubstep with the forthcoming Substratum EP. This is a weighty 2-part release featuring a clutch of new producers repping from Bristol to Barcelona, all supplying tunes designed to work as well off the dance floor as on it. Part 1. Spanish dubstep impresario’s 23Hz & Numaestro finally see Galleon Dub touch wax after what seems like an eternity on dubplate! Ethnic tinges and paranoid pads drift over the resonating subs and crisp percussion. Grim soldier Atki2 gets choppy with Douceur, building tension throughout with sliced & reversed drums; mournful strings and nasty squelch bass. Part 2. Forsaken’s Thunder kicks off with a warm boom bass and fathoms-deep space ethereals, then the devastating reese line comes out of nowhere to hit you right between the eyes. Finally, new artist Diem serves up Sitar Dub, a stone cold killer with air-bulging LFOs to complement the huge echo chamber snares and classic dread samples.

Praise for Electric Birdland:

Grimey Dubstep sounds backed up with some hefty Drum & Bass / Junglist cuts from these bods who previously appeared on one of the Werk Grim Dubs EPs (if I remember rightly). Tight production and some whopping great big basslines (particularly on the Grime side) mean that this'll be seeing some serious play on the heavier dancefloors. One of the best Deathsucker releases so far in my opinion. Check. (Smallfish Records)

Nice to get a 12" on Death$ucker at the end of all the 6 stringed mayhem. This is a 4 track newie by MONKEY STEAK, side 'B' featuring tidy, funky breaks/itchy grimey beats, effortless playful agit funk rythyms with lots of skanking ideas & dancefloor pummeling action. I feel this label bridges the gap between quality underground club music & the madder end of DnB, comin atcha like a passionate stable for the less nihilistic elements of the breakcore scene. This is beautifully produced stuff full of deep sounds, eastern samples & slightly wonky exitable beats. Flip over, you get some breathless skittering DnB action with some sweet reggae touches from the classic track 'Too Late' (this is side A! I keep on doing these records the wrong way round. Do I give a toss???) 'Toxic RIP VIP' finishes the fun with some twatted DnB hyper breaks & some mad ass warped dub/harmonica action. Cracking gear. (Norman Records)

"elecric birdland ep" is their latest offering on the excellect death$ucker label. the a side features two tracks of jungle sweetness; "too late" and "toxic rip vip", the later a tribute to the late toxic dancehall (probably the uk's best ever breakcore party!). the b side is a more 2 step garage / grime flavoured affair; "black milk" and "gaza stripclub" have monkey steak flexing their bass muscles, proving that its not all about junglism. (Rough Trade)

Fresh from having his last single remixed by Pinch, Bristol's Monkeysteak drops this four tracker, with two good rather tight Eastern influenced tracks with some tight exciting editing and punchy sounds. The other side which carries a reggae version of Mum favorite Carole King's ' Too Late' is entertaining and a good attempt but needs some work. Toxic Rip V.I.P. is a mashed up piece of err mash up. (Warpmart)

For their first solo release (following a split with Dswat's founder Parasite), Monkey Steak present a very strong four tracker on which these duo display more than ever their dubby roots. While the whole thing is obviously drum'n'bass, several tracks on this "Electric Birdland" have a light-sounding, flowing dub bassline and feel, with some slight hip hop experiments. Add to this a very catchy Bollywood-inspired tune, and you get a pleasant, well done and very "spinnable" record. Recommended. (Ad Noiseam)

"Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - Yesterday I went to Liquid Mastering in London with Sam (aka Atki2) from Monkey Steak to cut the new "Electric Birdland" 12" EP for Death$ucker (DSR20). We met Jon (the other half of Monkey Steak), who managed to bunk off work for the afternoon to attend the cut. The lathe had been out of action for a few weeks, so Nick the studio engineer (who has cut the last seven Death$ucker releases to date!) was delighted to have it in working order again. It facinates me to think that this is cutting edge vinyl technology and it's 25 years old! Will they still be using analogue lathes in 25 years time? I guess it ultimately depends on the demand for vinyl as a music medium. So come on people, support vinyl culture!!!Anyway the cut went really well! The A side of the EP features two tracks of jungle sweatness "Too Late" and "Toxic RIP VIP", the later a tribute to the late Toxic Dancehall (probably the UK's best ever breakcore night...in my slightly biased opinion ;). Haiku is a growling, hybrid electronic track constructed from far-eastern battlefield samples arranged into a staggering rhythm of glitches, sword clashes and flying sparks introduced in gradual measures.

The original version came about organically and unplanned after loads of late nights working with samples and sounds that happened to fit together. The final result seems to sit between a few genres… with each remix pushing the track toward specific influences from electro, electronica and dubstep sources, by adepts in each respective school of thought such as Ed Chamberlain (Base Logic), Monkey Steak, Blackmass Plastics and Point B. This is the label's 9th release, traditionally considered a lucky number among ancient ninja clans.

'Easy gang. most of you know that my usual weekly dubstep show on darkfm.com has been offline for the last few weeks, this has been due to the studio moving location to Bristol. We are now ready to bring the show back with the sickest lineup the south west has to offer!!!!

"Despite a ludicrous back-story involving otters and the Bronte Sisters, Atki2 (aka Sam Atkins) is as serious as Paxman when it comes to his beats - with this brand new 12" dubstepping it's way straight into your cranium. Undoubtedly attracting most attention due to it's jaw-breaking Pinch remix, 'Guilty Pleasures' is an EP overflowing with sonorous bass, chunky-knit beats and ruptured vocals - the wholesale effect being both aurally bewildering and finely detailed. Opening with the title track, Atki is up to his elbows in seething dubstep; as 'Guilty Pleasures' rattles around the more electronic end of the Grim spectrum and makes sterling use of Indi Kaur's sliced/diced Persian/hip-hop/folk vocals. 1st May 2006 sees the release of the “Guilty Pleasures” ep on Werk Discs. Featuring on the title track (not to mention the Pinch remix) are vocals by Indi Kaur, who I met last year at a gig Renée and I did at Deal Real Records off Carnaby Street in London. Indi describes her vocal style and music as “a melting pot of cultures and distinctive flavours” taking influence from “Indian music, electronic beats, Persian singing, modern R'n'B impro, acoustic pop/folk textures and much more”. She and I had a handful of amazing studio sessions last summer, and I can certainly vouch for her amazing ability to switch musical styles and techniques, not to mention her real warmth and enthusiasm! Indi’s involved in a number of other projects as well, and has two other releases to my knowledge, an album with her long time producer Majiker, and an EP called “Keep On Walking” which is a series of songs about four heros of Sikhism. Thanks for everyone who came down to see Monkey Steak play over the last week. Three wicked gigs with Rag & Bone a week ago, Ruffnek Diskotek last Thursday and Soundslike Werk last night down in Herne Hill (featuring a secret line up of significant techno bods those names I'm sure I would remember had I not consumed quite so much booze and spliff during the proceedings). “Sam Atkins was last called Atki2 on The Dudes EP on Shadetek, which contained slaybass stomper Pout & Purchase, and he’s on no less fearsome form here. ‘Shocking Out Proud (Sweaty Palms Mix)’ is a frightmareish mirror-hall of liquid-sword synth, icy beats, sudden ruptures of buzz-bass and a lyric so hilariously party-down it’s like Doug E Fresh playing at a deserted Antarctic weather station. S’a fucking strange tune, just a totally anti-linear hostile soundscape alive with engrossing detail, details that have you squinting one just as the track’s ready to thunk the back of your neck with a fresh piece of bedlam. The "Sweaty Palms EP", featuring my collaboration with South London based rapper, Renée Silver, is due out on Shadetek next week. As part of the hype, Renée has kindly supplied a few words about herself, to fill you in on her story so far...:

"Enthralled by Hip Hop from the second she heard the beats, Renée Silver has been rapping relentlessly ever since. This began with freestyling before her ever-prevalent lyrical urges also got their hands on a pen and pad, and she developed the art of writing engaging, emotionally charged and quick-witted rhymes. Indeed, 2006 will see this wordsmith make the smooth transition from a gifted live performer, used to pulling off high energy, highly entertaining gigs on the underground scene, to a successful recording artist. And if she can keep on writing and performing material like her forthcoming track, ‘Shocking Out Proud! (Sweaty Palms Mix)’, then she’ll be entertaining us for years to come. Although, in all honesty, she’ll probably do that whatever happens! I mean let us just recap 2004-05 for her: sick freestyle after phat freestyle, which resulted in Deal Real Records reaping the benefits, when she challenged this highly critical Hip Hop crowd to make her work with any word that they could throw at her, at the Female All Stars’ Christmas finale. Of course, she reigned supreme: devouring word after word, in rhyme after rhyme. Indeed, this is now a regular feature in her stage shows, which always delights the crowd. That said, by July ‘04, writing, gigging and freestyling alone were no longer sufficient to satisfy her itch to rhyme; so she ventured out into the cold world of ‘battling’. Now, almost 18 months on, she has battled it out in Bedford, Bournemouth and Manchester as well as at London’s infamous Battle Scars, Lyric Pad and The Jump Off. And her travels have hardly been in vain as she has won more than 50% of the battles that she has entered, and ended 2004 as Lyric Pad’s reigning champ. She then burst into 2005 taking battling to another level, when she won the first London heat of Battle Scars, with previously unseen ingenuity and skill.

“There’s some crazy fuckers out there. But to be fair, most of them are hiding some
sort of twisted genius, laughing at you, laughing at them. Renée Silver would happily fit into this category.” Wah! Issue No. 1, 2005.

"So we patiently await the Battle Scars grande finale with baited breath! What of the remaining battles that she has lost though, I hear you ask? Silly question, especially if you have ever seen her or even just heard Lyric Pad’s recordings of the battles on Itch FM (105.5). However, if you insist on receiving a factual answer, here it is. First up, cheers to the promotors who booked us for shows this month: Toxic Dancehall was awesome - we had an amazing night. Shout outs to Ali, Armin and Ed - shame it was the last one, but what a way to go out! Top night.

Last week's Ruffnek Diskotek was also killer. Big up to Distance and Bubonic for their wicked sets in the main room, and to Dub Boy and Forensics for all their hard work making the night happen. With the demise of Toxic, it's good to see Bristol is alive with fresh parties like this one to stand in it's place.
